Batangas Beach Resort: Top 5 Critters to find in Anilao, Batangas

A two hour-drive away from Manila, Anilao made a name for themselves as one of the richest macro dive destinations in the Pacific. Despite being one of the Philippines’ most underrated and under explored locations by foreign travelers, they have slowly but steadily gained recognition among local divers. The exquisite diving spots have some of the highest concentration of diverse marine life in the world including over 90% of coral species. Listed below are some of the critters that you can add to your photo memorabilia.

Best Beaches in Batangas

  1. Weedy Scorpionfish

Also known as the popeyes scorpionfish, the carnivorous ray-finned fish with poisonous spines are found in depths ranging from 13 to 90 meters. These fascinating critters can be found in rocky, algae rich waters whereas they look covered in weed-like appendages, while specimens with fewer appendages are found in deeper soft-bottomed waters with soft corals and sponges. Their tiny holes are so enthralling it would be regretful not to take only a few pictures.

  1. Blue-ringed Octopus

Currently acknowledged as one of the most venomous marine animals, the miniscule body and relatively docile nature of Blue-ringed octopuses create interesting shots for your collection.

They can be easily seen because of their blue and black rings and yellowish skin. When under threat, their brown patches darken instantly as a sign of reflex. The aesthetic creature hunts small crabs, hermit crab, and shrimp and may even bite humans if provoked. Fret not, as long as you show no harm, you’ll be able to take pictures of them to commemorate your achievement.

  1. Harlequin Shrimp

With the scientific name, hymenocera picta, the harlequin shrimp is found at coral reefs in the tropical Indian and Pacific oceans. Commonly found in pairs and eat starfishes exclusively (including crown-of-thorns itself), they are about 5 centimeters or 2 inches lengthwise. If it were from the central and east Pacific, the spots are deep pinkish-purple with yellow edges whereas harlequins shrimps with more brownish spots and blue edges are found in the Indian Ocean and west Pacific. At first, you’ll doubt yourself for seeing something shiny under the sea, only to find out it’s the lovely harlequin shrimp.

  1. Bobbit Worm

The aquatic predatory polychaete worm that dwells at approximately 10 to 40 meters deep has a long body, armed with sharp teeth is an omnivorous animal.
