Truly Batangueno Products for Pasalubong

Truly Batangueno Products for Pasalubong

Despite Batangas being a few hours away from Manila proper and not really being considered enough as going “out of town”, you can admit that you still have people in your lives who tell you to bring them “pasalubong” the moment then find out you’re planning to take a short break at the Batangas beaches.

So, if you are going on a trip to go scuba diving here at Eagle Point Beach and Diving Resort in Batangas and you’re one of the few who actually take pasalubong requests by heart, no need to fret, there are a lot of truly Batangueno products you can buy in this place. Here’s to name a few:

  1. Kapeng Barako

Kapeng barako is named after the Tagalog term for “wild boar” which are known to dine on the plant’s berries and leaves. The very first Barako tree was a cut all the way from Brazil and planted back in the 1800s in the city of Lipa Batangas. This type of coffee, which belongs to the Coffea liberica species, is popular for those who prefer a strong taste and flavor. Many Filipinos sweeten this through honey or brown sugar but it can be used for espresso and other espresso-based drinks. Kapeng barako may seem like a common kind of coffee in the Philippines but in the world, it accounts for less than 1% of commerical grown coffee; now that’s a pasalubong they can’t find elsewhere.

  1. Lambanog

From one strong flavor to another, let’s talk about Lambanog. Lambanog is an alcoholic drink commonly described as coconut vodka or coconut wine. It is potent with a typical alcohol content of 40 to 45% after just one distillation. It’s usually served pure but commercialized versions of Lambanog has introduced to the market new flavors such as pineapple, mango, bubblegum, and cinammon which you can buy even from 7-11 convenience stores. Of course, for truly organic flavor, it’s still best to buy Lambanog from local provinces in Batangas or Quezon. The great thing about buying Lambanog as pasalubong for your friends is that you can drink it with them!

  1. Balisong

Sometimes called a Batangas knife, a balisong or butterfly knife is a folding pocket knofe with two handles that counter-rotate around the tang when opened. Yes, this type of knife can be bought anywhere but it is traditionally made in Batangas so we believe it could still count as pasalubong. It’s a perfect tool for self defense but it could also be used as a pocket utility knife. In Batangas, trained users even perform manipulations called “flipping” as an art form or entertainment. If you want, you could also purchase blunt versions of these knives, which are called “trainers”, so you and your friends can practice tricks without fear of slicing yourself before you actually move on to use your balisong.

  1. Embroideries

For your moms and aunts, you could bring them pasalubong in the form of beautiful embroideries Batangauenos are also known for. Locally known as “Burdang Taal”, you can find carefully crafted jusi and pina fabrics embroidered with various intricate designs. In fact, Taal is a popular source for wardrobes specializing in Filipiniana-themed events as well as weddings. This means you can buy something as fancy as a dress or you could go for something smaller and for daily use like a hankerchief, throw pillow case, or a table cloth. If you have time, you can even watch the weavers in action as they make one simple local fabric into a work of art!

  1. Shirts

Of course, you can always go for the classic pasalubong- destination shirts. The great thing about this one is it comes in all shapes, sizes, and colors breaing your love for Batangas. What’s even better is that you don’t have to go to another town or even that far to purhase one; in fact, you can buy it on the last minute before you leave Batangas! You know why? We have a lot of these in our gift shop here at Eagle Point Beach and Diving Resort!
